Lot 289

Description

Aleksei Stepanovich Stepanov,
Russian 1858-1923-

Early spring;

oil on canvas, signed in Cyrillic (lower right), 61.6 x 81.4 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work is demonstrative of Stepanov's distinctive style. He was a member of the Peredvizhniki group, or 'Itinerants', who rejected the strict rules of academic art
and its division between 'high' and 'low' art, and instead embraced a greater realism, choosing to depict the landscapes of rural Russia and the everyday activities of its inhabitants. This striking work by Stepanov exhibits this approach in its unusual composition, with the artist having cropped the trees, and opted for a downward focus towards their trunks and the ground below. This directly challenges the more expansive vistas which conventionally form landscape paintings, which were themselves already seen as a 'lower' genre of art than, for example, history painting.

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
