Description
Sir William Russell Flint, RA PRWS,
Scottish 1880-1969-
Cynthia;
black chalk on paper, signed 'W Russell Flint' (lower left), dated and inscribed with measurements '21.3.57 Cynthia' (lower edge), and further inscribed 'Cynthia' (on the lower mount), 24.3 x 42.4 cm., ARR.
Provenance:
Acquired by the father of the present owners before 1975.
Note:
The model Cynthia appears in a number of Flint's works on paper, including a watercolour which sold at Bonhams, London, 31 March 2021 (£41,500). The present work similarly depicts her nude figure, her face in profile, draped across a bed, with the sumptuous fabric which surrounds her further adding to the drawing's sensuous feeling. In this drawing, Flint has effectively contrasted the delicate shading of the model's figure with the loose, sketchy handling of the sheets around her.
