Lot 2

Description

Follower of Andrea d'Agnolo, called Andrea del Sarto,
Italian 1486-1530-

The Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist and two angels;

oil on poplar panel, 118.1 x 88.3 cm., (unframed).

Provenance:
Anon. sale [Herbert Walker]; Christie's, London, 2 August 1928, lot 109, as 'Del Sarto' (26 gns. to Ackermann).
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 8 December 2017, lot 245;
where purchased by the present owner.

Note:
This picture relates to the slightly smaller composition by Andrea del Sarto, dating to c.1517-19, which is held in the Wallace Collection, London [no.P9].

The Virgin supports the standing Christ who, with his outstretched right hand, blesses the infant St John the Baptist at the lower left. St John is already dressed in animal skins of the kind he will wear when preaching in the desert. Behind him are two angels. Del Sarto's original panel demonstrates his increasingly mannerist elegance, in its colouring, complex artificial composition and elegantly refined poses, which nevertheless convey emotion with great immediacy.
