Footnote
The English, Welsh and Chinese dragons chase each other for eternity around the base of the objet d'art, their wings and tails supporting the bowl. Describing the symbolism behind the piece, Martin Baker explains that the Chinese dragon symbolises good luck, strength and health, while the English and Welsh dragons symbolise good and evil, and authority and power. Wax carving is one of Martin Baker's specialties, and he carved each dragon in keeping with its national identity. The bowl was pressed into a wooden former and the dragons modelled in wax, and then cast and oxidised (ageing with a solution) to darken the features.
The enamelling on the bowl, by Jane Short, represents the fiery breath of the dragons. The triangular profile of the dish was determined by the three dragons below it and the three sections on the dish give each dragon a distinct domain on the piece, unifying both dragons and dish, echoed by Jane's enamelled flame design. The dish was pressed onto a hard wood former and stoned up to finish. The dragons were hand carved out of blue wax and cast.
