Footnote
This unique piece was commissioned privately by the vendor. Fred describes his style of enamelling as a hybrid of cloisonné, basse-taille, and champlevé, and each hand made piece results from an incredibly labour-intensive process. The enamelled design must first be scribed onto the surface of the form. Cloissons are then cut, bent into shape, applied to the piece and soldered on. This 'draws' the design on to the vase. Once the design is in place, the metal is hand-carved in relief. This not only removes the fire stain from the metal, but gives the enamel added life and brilliance through the use of textures.

Fred's outstanding work, in which technical perfection combines with creativity and artistry, has won him many accolades. He is a four-time winner of The Jacques Cartier Memorial Award, a Diamonds International Award winner, and four-time winner of the Goldsmiths' Craft & Design Council Goldsmiths' Company Award. His work is held in many public and private collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Museum and The Goldsmiths' Company Collection.
