Melo melo pearls are believed to be the rarest in the world. Sometimes referred to as Dragon Pearls, they originate from a marine species known as Volutidae and come from the Melo snail or Indian volute. The pearls take decades to form and are composed not of nacre but calcite and aragonite which produces its characteristic flame effect and porcelain like appearance. The large Melo molluscs are not common and only one in several thousand might contain a pearl. The Melo snail can be found in the South China sea, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Burma and Vietnam. Melo pearls cannot be cultured.
