Description
A engraved octagonal brass pandan, Gujarat, 18th century, the domed lid faceted and with raised tiers to top, decorated to sides with panels containing stylized incised four-petal flowers, central flower head to lid, 16 cm. diameter, 9.3 cm high.
Provenance: Private UK Collection
Lot Footnotes
Zebrowski notes that prior to the 19th century no existing polygonal, round or cusped pandans has an interior compartment, while many of the 19th century examples do. The earlier examples, modelled on Islamic prototypes, must have been used therefore to hold the pan liquid after it had been stuffed and rolled ready to eat, rather than the individual ingredients for it in separate sections (M. Zebrowski, Gold, Silver & Bronze from Mughal India, Alexandria Press, 1997, p. 264.
The four-petalled flower is present on a brass casket attributed to Rajasthan and the 17th-18th century (ibid., no. 481).
