Lot 287

Description

A rare Burmese embroidered textile panel (kalaga), Myanmar, (Burma), 19th century, cotton, wool and felt applique on a wool ground with some painting, the central scene depicting an enthroned ruler with attendants either side, parasols behind and hanging chandeliers above, within a border of large flowers on a deep red ground, 148.5 x 116cm.

Provenance: Gift to present owner from Thea Porter

Dorothea Noelle Naomi "Thea" Porter (1927 2000) was a British artist, fashion designer and retailer who in the 1960s brought opulent Middle East fashions to London.

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, UK, houses a late nineteenth century kalaga from Myanmar (acc. no. IS.2-1963). It measures 293.5 x 124.5. The main subject of this kalaga is the story of the Queen Manohari.

Our panel may also depict Manohari seated in royal style, and being attended by two servants.
