Lot 392

Description

Marc Camille Chaimowicz,
British b.1947 -

A Sort of Truce, 1986;

oil on canvas board and wood inlay screen, in three parts, numbered on lower inside edge of each panel 'IV', H201 x W223 x D36 cm (overall) (ARR)

Provenance:
private collection, purchased directly from the artist

Note:
this key early piece demonstrates the artist's use of the products and language of interior design, calling out the forgotten history and beauty of the objects around us. In 'A Sort Of Truce', the artist assimilates his painterly vocabulary onto a sleek mid-century style screen, breaking down the traditional boundaries between sculpture and painting, design and Fine Art, along with notions of 'good taste'. His painterly style falls between the biomorphic forms of Arshile Gorky, the chalky flatness of Edouard Vuillard and the pastel shades of domestic design, creating a language that is at once familiar and surprising. This is one of a series of five screens the artist made between 1986 and 87. This was an important period for the artist, with a number of exhibitions in London, Geneva and Montreal, as well as a solo exhibition 'Autour de Cinq Paravents' at the Musée des Beaux Arts, Dijon.

Marc Camille Chaimowicz has exhibited extensively internationally since the 1970s, and two other works from this series of screens from 1987, 'Laura Street, for Georgy' and 'Festivity', were included in the catalogue for his recent retrospective at The Serpentine Gallery, London in 2016. Further recent solo exhibitions have been held at The Jewish Museum, New York, in 2018, Kunsthalle, Bern, in 2020 and he is currently the subject of an exhibition at WIELS, Belgium, which runs until the 13th August 2023. Works by the artist are in public collections worldwide including MoMA, New York and Tate, London.
