Description

The Blue Tree, 1989-91;

oil on canvas, 198.5 x 108 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
with Marlborough Fine Art, London, 1991, no.8;
private collection;
Christie’s, London, 12th July 2008, lot 308;
private collection, purchased from the above

Exhibited:
Marlborough Fine Art, London, ‘Ken Kiff: Recent Work’, 7th June - 6th July 1991, p.10 no.8 (illus. in catalogue)

Note:
This is a brilliant example of the artist’s style, with its playful sense of mysticism and deep understanding of colour. Kiff was a pioneering figure in British painting during the 1980s along with his contemporary Paula Rego, bringing back a symbolic and narrative quality to his work, that harked back to early Modernists such as Marc Chagall and Paul Klee. This is one of a number of works Kiff made featuring an Eve-like figure, here sat next to the Tree of Life. Kiff’s Eve is a positive force, of life and beauty. Shortly after making this work, he would become Associated Artist at the National Gallery, London from 1992-93.

Ken Kiff was also a highly influential tutor at the Royal College of Art, teaching major figures including Tracey Emin. His work was recently the subject of a major show at Carl Freedman Gallery, Margate in 2022 and at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich in 2019. His works are in public collections including the Tate and the Arts Council Collection.
