Lot 149

Description

A Scottish gilt-brass and agate paper knife, attributed to Hamilton, Crichton & Co. of Edinburgh, last quarter 19th century, the blade chased with scrolling foliate design and pierced mount, the tapering handle with floral mount and inset with agates, 25.5cm long

Note: A letter opener with similar agate handle was at offered Sotheby's, 11 December 2020, Lot 15.

Alexander Crichton was born in Edinburgh in 1839 and entered a silver cup into the 1870 Society of Arts exhibition. He registered his mark at Goldsmiths Hall in November 1872, with a workshop located at 47 Great Russell Street. In the early 1880's he designed his fantastical animal claret jugs for which he is so well known, creating more than thirty-four silver and glass examples between 1881 and 1882.

Although Alexander Crichton was a London silversmith, he had strong Scottish connections as many of his works were sold by Hamilton, Crichton & Co., Scottish goldsmiths of 41 George Street, Edinburgh. The identity of Crichton’s partner, Hamilton, remains unclear.
