Lot 267

Description

A carved soft and fruit wood intarsia relief of Bacchus and Ceres, Eger Workshops, possibly Adam Eck (1604-1664) or Johann Georg Fischer (1587-1664), 17th century, of rectangular form, formally the lid to a casket, Bacchus depicted with vines in his hair picking grapes, Ceres beside a fountain, holding an urn with flowers, a hunting scene to the woodland background, in a ripple moulded ebonised frame, 21 x 50cm overall

Note: This style of workmanship is attributed to the town of Eger, located in Bohemia, now in the present day Czech Republic, which uniquely specialised in this type of intarsia and low relief veneering from the end of the 16th century to the beginning of the 18th century. Commonly depicting a wide range of mythological and historical subjects circulated at the time via prints and engravings, this art was carried on in the same family across generations and some of the most popular workshops were those of Johann Georg Fischer (1587-1669) and Adam Eck.
