Lot 88

Description

A large Chinese celadon jade reticulated 'prunus and chrysanthemum' water coupe

Late Ming/early Qing dynasty, 17th century

Carved and pierced from a pale celadon stone with striated white and russet inclusions, the large vessel formed as a prunus flowerhead supported and surrounded by an intricate network of leafy and flowery gnarled stems interlinked with flowering chrysanthemums, leaving a gap for the beak of the coupe, 18cm wide.

明末清初 鏤雕梅菊紋水盂

Reticulated jade water coupes, cups and brush washers deeply carved and pierced were popular in the 17th century; few, however are as large and as complete as the present lot, which appears to have been carved from a large boulder and is surrounded overall by leafy stems.

Cf. a related floral cup from the Qing Court Collection and dated to the Ming dynasty illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jadeware (II), Hong Kong, 2006, no. 198. Two further examples, one carved as a peach and one as a flower, are illustrated by P.F. Schneeberger, The Baur Collection, Geneva: Chinese Jades and Other Hardstones, Geneva, 1976, nos. B41 and B42.
