Lot 48

Description

A Chinese bronze archaic tripod ritual wine vessel, jue

Shang dynasty

Cast with whorl-capped posts, prominent spout and flaring tripod legs, the mid section with taotie in shallow-relief over a leiwen ground, the traces of two characters under the single animal-mask handle, the surface patinated to a dark greenish hue strewn with verdigris, 21.5cm high.

商 銅饕餮紋爵

Bronze vessels like the present lot were used by the Shang Kings, and later by those of the Zhou Dynasty, to prepare and consume wine in ceremonies that would link the kings to the spirits of their ancestors, and symbolise both their power and legitimacy to rule with the mandate of Heaven.

Emblematic of the outstanding mastery of metallurgy in ancient China, and of the ability of Shang Dynasty craftsmen to marry functionality with elaborate decoration, the silhouette of the jue became a symbol of status when interred in the tombs of nobility. The cultural relevance and status of the jue remained such that even when its ritualistic used ceased, the shape was used for millenia until the Qing Dynasty in various mediums, from copper alloys, lacquer, cloisonné-enamel, rhinoceros horn, to porcelain.
