Lot 201

Description

Shanti Panchal (Indian, b. 1951)

Padabhishek

signed and dated in devanagiri upper left, further signed 'Shanti Panchal' to the verso

watercolour on paper

framed and glazed, executed in 2006

57 x 77 cm. (ARR)

Provenance: Acquired by the vendor directly from the artist in 2006.

Shanti Panchal was born in Mesar, Gujarat, India, and studied at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Bombay. He moved to London in 1978 to study at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London, after being awarded a British Council Scholarship. During these years, Panchal had widely travelled around Europe, where he had the chance to observe works by El Greco, William Blake and De Chirico amongst others.

'Watercolour paintings were too limited to pretty flowers and sweet landscapes. It was a very frustrating experience. I was not prepared to accept the conventional limits of the medium' recounts the painter in an interview given to Art Review in 1998. This is when Panchal started his experiments with watercolours that gave life to works influenced by western and eastern tradition together in a completely new manner. His Padabhishek series is directly influenced by Jainism, and more precisely by a spiritual event he'd witnessed himself in February 2006, in Mumbai. He then attended the 'Padhabishek of Sri Virendra Muni' where a Jain monk is initiated to the highest monastic rank. The attendees are shown as spiritually awaken by the eyes, shaven heads and sacred colours.

Shanti Panchal is an artist-in-residence at the British Museum, London and Harris Museum, Preston since 1994.

Another painting of the same series is in the South & South Asia Collection of the V&A.
