Lot 354

Description

A fragmentary Umayyad limestone Tombstone, Arabian peninsula, circa 700AD, of irregular rectangular form, incised with lines of early kufic script, 35 x 33 cm. max.

Provenance: Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 7 October 2014, Lot 17.

Inscriptions: 'O my God forgive....Bin Hasib....Medina and died....

The technique used to inscribe this limestone slab does not permit a proper reading of the text, which was written in a cursive script typical of the early Islamic era. No date is fully legible, thus the inscription cannot be definitively attributed.

The Umayyad period is often considered the formative period in Islamic art. At first, even though Arabic became the official language and Islam the principal religion of the diverse lands unified under Umayyad rule, artists continued to work in their established manner.

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
