Lot 144

Description

A collection of wooden toys, late 20th century, to include: Tumbling clown, painted plywood, wood, cotton, approx. 25.5cm high; Toucan, painted plywood, plastic, wire, approx. 24.8cm high; and other toys (lot)

Sir Nicholas Goodison noted:

Tumbling Clown: The clown tumbles down head over heels as the cotton unwinds from the bar, and rises up again with the momentum created, and continues to descend and ascend until the momentum dies down. This is a toy made all over the world.

Toucan: Given a push on the back of the head, the toucan will somersault for some time. He remains stoic in expression throughout. The eyeball is loose in the plastic eye, but you have to be sharp-eyed yourself to see it move as the bird rotates.

Provenance:

Tumbling Clown: Purchased, Covent Garden market, early 1980s.

Toucan: Purchased, Covent Garden Market, London, early 1980s.

Roseberys do not guarantee the working order of any automata or toy.
