Description
David Cox, Cat Jumping Jack, painted cardboard, paper, cord, signed D. COX and inscribed MODERN ART, approx. 71.5cm high; together with a collection of wooden toys, mostly Circus themed, to include: George and Kathleen Sinclair, Jumping Jack Model, painted wood, thread, approx. 27.5cm high; Robert Race, b.1943, Falling Parrot and Falling Puffin pulley toys, each approx. 15cm wide; and other wooden pulley toys (lot)
Sir Nicholas Goodison noted:
Cat Jumping Jack: The cat is modelled on a traditional jumping jack. His arms and legs are not jointed but cause plenty of body movement as they open and come together. The head is loosely fitted and sways accordingly. The cat has silver and red paper eyes, which like all good cats eyes shine in the night and all day. Cox calls both this Modern Art.
Jumping Jack Model: The model raises her arms and legs when the strings attached to them are pulled down. The jumping jack is a traditional toy made in many countries. This is an amateur and somewhat ponderous version made by George Sinclair and painted by his mother. It is said to be based on a 16th or 17th century design but it is a strange costume. But the lady jumps high.
Provenance:
Cat Jumping Jack: Purchased: Hitchcocks, Bath, 6th Annual Toy and Automata Exhibition, May 1998.
Jumping Jack Model: Purchased, Museum of Naïve Art, Bath, May 1991.
Roseberys do not guarantee the working order of any automata or toy.
