Description

Robert Race, b. 1943, Spring Time, a hand-operated automaton, driftwood, woods, bamboo, iron, feathers, 68cm high, 56cm wide, 30cm deep

Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: the landscape in which the four puffins are sporting themselves, with its rusty iron industrial fragments, isnt spring-like; but the spring is in the puffins steps as the projecting levers attached to the rotating piece of driftwood in turn trigger the bamboo springs that hold each puffin. The effect is to shoot the puffins in turn up the stems that they are attached to. They achieve different heights but tests have not been carried out to establish a relationship between vigour in turning the handle and the height achieved.

Provenance: Purchased directly from Robert Race, December 1992.

Note: Robert Race, b.1943, exhibits his moving toys, automata, and kinetic sculpture in Britain and internationally. He is a member and past Chairman of the British Toymakers Guild. His work often incorporates a wide range of natural, re-used, and recycled material to make objects which move in simple but interesting ways.

Roseberys do not guarantee the working order of any automata or toy.
