Lot 96

Description

Tony Mann, 1927-2013, Carousel Merry-go-round, a hand-operated automaton, painted wood, wire, feathers, 34.5cm high, 24cm wide, 24.2cm deep, together with two other pieces by the same artist, comprising: Flapper dragon, painted wood, feathers, signed Tony Mann to underside, 20.7cm long, 5.2cm wide; and Chorus Line, wood, feathers, signed Tony Mann, approx. 20cm high, 34.5cm wide (3)

Sir Nicholas Goodison noted:

Carousel Merry-go-round: a single workman appears to be turning the roundabout, with the real driving handle being at the other end of the shaft. Four people are riding the steeds, two men on birds with feather tails and two women riding cows. Mann enjoys working with bright colours.

Flapper Dragon: The highly decorative Chinese dragon opens his upper jaw when the toy is waved up and down. A group of flappers would make quite a noise and add to the excitement of a Chinese festival.

Chorus Line: The can-can dancers sway in unison to left and right, as they should, through the hand operation of the two parallel levers on which they are mounted.

Provenance:

Carousel Merry-go-round: Purchased, Hitchcocks, Somerset, June 1993.

Flapper Dragon: Purchased Tony Mann, August 1993.

Chorus Line: Purchased, Tony Mann, January 2000.

Note: Tony Mann, 1927-2013, worked for 20 years as an industrial designer before turning his creative energy into automata. Each is a one-of-a-kind piece and show his love of bright colours. He was voted Toymaker of the Year by the British Toymakers Guild for both 1987 and 1988.

Roseberys do not guarantee the working order of any automata or toy.
