Lot 94

Description

Tony Mann, 1927-2013, Pyramid of Power, a hand-operated automaton, painted wood, wire rod, brass, signed and dated Tony Mann '95, 65cm high, 78cm wide, 9.7cm deep

Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: Manns depiction of enterprise is a caricature, but like all caricatures has an element of truth. The workers toil at repetitive work in the factory, overseen by the foreman with his worksheet. The Managing Director talks on the telephone while his secretary waits patiently for his dictation in his spacious office. At the top the capitalist owner drinks Champagne and smokes a cigar in his triangle of paradise at the top of the pyramid. The business has clearly been successful and he is toasting his good fortune. But he is no longer with us, he is up in the clouds, having spent a gainful life exploiting the toils of others.

Provenance: Purchased, Kristin Baybars, London, February 1995.

Note: Tony Mann, 1927-2013, worked for 20 years as an industrial designer before turning his creative energy into automata. Each is a one-of-a-kind piece and show his love of bright colours. He was voted Toymaker of the Year by the British Toymakers Guild for both 1987 and 1988.

Roseberys do not guarantee the working order of any automata or toy.
