Description
John Mulcaster Carrick,
British 1833-1896-
Villefranche-sur-mer, near Nice;
oil on canvas, signed and dated 'J.M. Carrick 1884' (lower right), further signed, dated, and titled 'Villafranca - / near Nice. / J.M. Carrick. / 1884.' on the reverse, 20.5 x 30.7 cm.
Provenance:
Purchased by the father of the present owner in the 1950s.
Note:
This bright, crisp landscape was painted by Carrick, whose travels around France and wider Europe served as the inspiration for a number of his views in oil. He often returned to the subject of coastal scenes and indeed exhibited another treatment of the land and sea around Nice at London's Royal Academy in 1860. Carrick's bold colour palette renders this work particularly vibrant, and his precise and considered brushwork allow for the impressive capturing of heightened levels of detail.
