Description
Edward Charles Williams,
British 1807-1881-
Wintertime: Radlett, Middlesex;
oil on canvas laid down on plywood, signed 'E. C. Williams.' (lower right), 41.2 x 29.8 cm: together with an oil on canvas, signed and dated 'Richard Elmore 1859-7' (lower right), signed, titled, and dated 'Bracken burning / near Sandstost [sic] Castle / by Weymouth / Painted by Richard Elmore 1895-7' verso, 45.8 x 61 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection.
Note:
Williams was the son of Edward Williams (1781-1855) and member of the Williams family of painters, also known as the Barnes School, which included George Morland (1764-1804) and James Ward (1769-1859). Williams's output is defined by his serene yet unsentimental depictions of the British landscape. Here, the bleakness of a snowy landscape is mitigated by the cozy cottage to the right, and the suggestion of a human figure wearing red at the end of the path.
