Lot 91

Description

Circle of Francis Danby, ARA,
Irish 1793-1861-

The shipwreck;

oil on panel, possibly indistinctly signed ‘WALKER’ (lower right), 44.1 x 70.5 cm., (unframed).

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work was presumably inspired by Francis Danby's larger oil on canvas of the same subject, painted in 1843 (Eric Adams, 'Francis Danby. Varieties of Poetic Landscape', 1973, cat.51, pl.71), listed as being in the ownership of James White, Dublin. The composition of both works is very similar with a few minor variations. Another shipwreck scene by Francis Danby - in stormier seas - dating to c.1850, is held at the Yale Center for British Art [B1981.25.200]. The artist behind the present scene is possibly John Rawson Walker (1796-1893).
