Description
William Collingwood Smith, RWS,
British 1815-1887-
The Glacier des Bossons;
pencil, watercolour, and bodycolour heightened with touches of white on paper, signed 'Collingwood Smith RWS' (lower right), bears an old inscribed label on the backing board, 23.5 x 35.5 cm.
Provenance:
with Caroline Gee Fine Art, Sussex, 2010.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Smith studied under the landscape artist James Duffield Harding (1798-1863) and travelled widely across Britain and Europe, producing watercolours and sketches along his way. The present work depicts the Glacier des Bossons, one of the largest glaciers in the Mont Blanc massif of the French Alps. Smith depicts the scene in springtime, with the verdant green shoots of grass contrasting with the pockets of white snow beyond, and the atmospheric mist of the valleys below.
