Description
Henri-Joseph Harpignies,
French 1819-1916-
A forest landscape on the edges of a lake, a town beyond;
oil on canvas, signed with initials and dated 'hh 1879' (lower right), 32 x 46 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 26 March 1987, lot 6.
Anon. sale, Christie's, New York, 25 October 2000, lot 57 ($7,638).
Private Collection, France.
Note:
The present work is possibly taken at Lake Nemi in the Lazio region of Italy, south of Rome. Together with his close friend Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875), Harpignies was a prominent painter of the Barbizon School. Here, he has successfully conveyed a dappled sunlight falling through the leaves, with the patches of light enhanced by the bright sky behind, and contrasting with the darkness of the forest floor.
