Note:
Salisbury was a highly skilled and revered portrait painter, producing likenesses of some of the most eminent figures in early to mid-20th-century high society. He achieved immense successes on both sides of the Atlantic, painting Winston Churchill on more occasions than any other artist, six American presidents, and many of the most prominent American businessmen of the day, such as W. K. Kellogg and J. P. Morgan. Other significant portraits include those of Richard Burton, Andrew Carnegie (posthumous), Sir Alan Cobham, Sir Robert Ludwig Mond, Maria Montessori, Montgomery of Alamein, Earl Mountbatten of Burma, John Player, and Lord Rank. Significantly, he was the first artist to paint Queen Elizabeth II. For images of the finished paintings in oils of his various sitters, see A. Barber, ‘The Art of Frank Salisbury’, Essex, 1936.
