Description
Sir Ernest Albert Waterlow, RA, ROI,
British 1850-1919-
Preparing the nets;
oil on canvas laid down on board, signed and indistinctly inscribed 'AE Waterlow ...' (lower left), 19 x 29 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work exhibits the tendencies which characterise Waterlow's oeuvre, particularly in his confident and expressive brushstrokes, and his warm yet muted colour palette of browns and reds. This painting is redolent of a powerful sense of quietude, with the fishermen engrossed in their tasks, unaware of, or uninterested in, the viewer's presence.
