Presented by Burley Fisher Books

In 1968, in collaboration with Robert Simon, the artist Harold Cohen designed an edition of Harold Pinter’s playtext The Homecoming, and illustrated it with nine original lithographs.

The book was published by Karnac books in a limited edition of 200 copies.

In preparation for the production of the book, the printers made a series of proofs of the lithographs. Each is a unique version of the print that made it into the final book, in which the artist and printer tested colour and saturation.

These proofs were acquired by Burley Fisher Books from the estate of Cesare Sarcedoti, the owner of Karnac Books, in 2022. We are delighted to present them for sale here at Townhouse Spitalfields, in a time-limited exhibition.

Harold Cohen (1 May 1928 – 27 April 2016) was a British-born artist who was noted as the creator of AARON, a computer program designed to produce art autonomously. His work in the intersection of computer artificial intelligence and art attracted a great deal of attention, leading to exhibitions at many museums, including the Tate Gallery in London, and acquisitions by many others. He represented Britain at the Venice biennale in 1966.

Harold Pinter (10 October 1930 – 24 December 2008) was born in Hackney and went on to be one of the greatest playwrights of his generation. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005.
