Note:
This work is from a series of portrait drawings Jessica Dismorr made of poets between 1934-35, which also included a portrait of Dylan Thomas and David Gasgoyne. Barker (1913-1991) was known for his mystical and often Surrealist work. His marriage to Elizabeth Smart was the subject of her cult novel 'By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept' 1945. The portrait is typical of Dismorr's precise yet exaggerated realism of the 1930s.

Jessica Dismorr was an important figure in early British Modernism, exhibiting with the Vorticist group alongside William Roberts and Wyndham Lewis.
