Note: The present piece is instantly recognisable as a work by the 20th-century French painter Roger Muhl. The colour palette in this work is typical of the light, bright shades regularly employed by the artist, evoking the bright sunlight and blue skies of his southern French surroundings. Like artists such as Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh, Muhl repeatedly returned to this subject-matter, clearly strongly inspired by the light and atmosphere of the South of France. In this present work, as in much of his output, Muhl generously applies pigment in geometric forms which are striking in their simplicity, recalling the gentle movement of boats in a marina, and the immediate sensory experience of such a view, in a manner which gestures towards the approach of his Impressionist forebears.
