Description
Maurice Brianchon,
French 1899-1979-
'The Cherry Orchard', 1955;
oil on canvas, signed 'Brainchon' lower left, 22x39cm(ARR)
Provenance:
Alfred Daber, Paris;
Arthur Tooth & Sons, London;
Note:
Maurice Brianchon is often seen as one of the key members of the group labelled Peintres de la Réalite Poétique, alongside Raymond Legueult and Roland Oudot.
Brianchon often returned to the theme of members of contemporary high society and their pursuits, a subject matter in keeping with his work as a decorative artist and set designer in the early 20th century. The present piece, as a depiction of a performance of Chekhovs The Cherry Orchard, can perhaps be seen to be drawing a parallel between the actors onstage, who are shown seated, as though observers themselves, and their audience, who may be seen as the true performers in a society well aware of the importance of being seen.
