Lot 19

Paul Nash,

British 18891946 -

River scene;

watercolour and pencil on paper, signed lower right 'Paul Nash', 18.7 x 54 cm

Arthur Tooth & Sons Ltd, London;

Paul Nash was a central figure in early British modernism, co-founding Unit One which brought together Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Edward Wadsworth and the critic Herbert Read.

His landscapes have a serene, otherworldly feeling to them, which the artist developed further in his pioneering Surrealist work of the 1920s and 30s. Along with his brother, John Nash, much of his work focused on the ancient British landscapes and its connection with history, seen in the present work in the view of a medieval church tower, offset against the gentle curve of the river. His landscapes were highly influential on a younger generation of artists including Eric Ravillious and Edward Bawden.
