Description
WITHDRAWN Edward Atkinson Hornel,
Scottish 1864-1933-
Three girls with dandelions in a woodland setting;
oil on canvas, signed and dated 'E. A Hornel / -93-' (lower left), 64.7 x 80.8 cm.
Provenance: Collection of Heinrich Riss (d.1969), Vienna (art collector).; By descent to the present owner.
Note: Hornel is celebrated for his depiction of children in woodland settings and the present work is a particularly charming example of his work. Defined by its flowing lines, almost Expressionist in style, the loose application of paint in unblended brushstrokes coveys a sense of the vitality of the pictures youthful subjects. Set in woodland which recalls the childrens illustrations of the late Victorian period, the artist has adopted a heightened contrast between darker shades of greens and greys and liberal accents of brighter pigments, thereby introducing further energy into the scene. Hornel was associated with the Glasgow Boys, the loose group of young artists that represented the beginnings of modernism in Scottish painting. His debt to the group is immediately apparent here in his rejection of traditional academic painting, with its strong focus on historical subjects and high levels of finish, in favour of a contemporary, rural setting, working out of doors and presumably painting directly onto the canvas. His loose application of paint evokes the freedom of the sitters in their outdoor setting in a manner which reveals a strong debt to Impressionism.
