Description
Mildred Anne Butler, RA, RWS,
Irish 1858-1941-
View of a garden; and View of a pond across the lake;
each pencil and watercolour on paper, the first signed 'Mildred A. Butler' (lower right), the second signed 'M. A. Butler' (lower left), the first 53 x 35.8 cm., the second 36 x 26.5 cm., two (2).
Provenance: The estate of the late designer Anthony Powell.
Note: The present works exhibit the Impressionistic tendencies typical of Butlers output, with her paintings en plein-air evoking her connection with the Newlyn and, by extension, the Barbizon Schools. The artists use of watercolour, the medium for which she was best known, enhances her landscapes, evoking the gentle movement of the foliage through the softly-blended pigments. The minimal figural presence in these works creates a sense of uninterrupted idyll and peace.
