Lot 263

Description

Eugenio Zampighi,

Italian 1859-1944-

His favourite tune;

oil on canvas, signed 'E. Zamphighi' (upper right), 58 x 44 cm.

Provenance: Private Collection.

Note: Many of Zampighis works can be viewed as highly romanticised depictions of contemporary society, with the artist repeatedly drawn to modest, rustic subjects, often dressed in colourful regional dress. In the present work, for example, the artist appears to be promoting the simple pleasures of the lower classes to the pursuits and excesses more commonly associated with the urban elites. Often conveying a sense of domestic harmony and bliss, in this case emphasised by the artists musical subject, his compositions are especially notable for their highly-detailed finish, with every area of this canvas afforded careful study and attention, and in particular the cracked and worn wall which forms the backdrop to the figures. For a similar work by the artist and of comparable dimensions, see Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 10 November 2021, lot 193.
