Lot 280

Description

Arthur Wardle, RI,

British 1864 1949-

Two Jack Russell terriers rabbiting on the edge of a wood;

oil on canvas, signed and dated 'Arthur Wardle '85' (lower left), 76 x 63.5 cm.

Note: Wardle was primarily celebrated as an animal painter, and particularly as a painter of terriers. In the present work, he convincingly conveys the energetic curiosity of the dogs as they investigate the warrens around them, and it is this palpable sympathy for his subjects which made Wardles work so popular with his contemporaries.
