Born in New Delhi in 1941, Rameshwar Broota showed talent in painting from an early age. He graduated from Delhi University of Art in 1964 and in 1967, he was elected president of the Triveni Kala Sangam Institute. From the beginning of his career, the human condition has been one of his main concerns. Between 1970 and 1980, he painted a series of oil paint canvases representing humanized gorillas, the latter being once a way of criticizing the political situation in his country. Later in his career, he mainly focused on the anatomy of the male body, which has been amazingly exhibited during in the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, during the retrospective Visions of Interiority: Interrogating the Male Body. Brootas works are today housed in leading collections in India and abroad including the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, the Rashtrapati Bhavan the official residence of the President of India, several Lalit Kala Akademi collections across India, and a number of educational and other institutions.
