Lot 154

Description

Martin Bradley,

British b.1931 -

Chevalier, 1962;

oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left 'Martin Bradley 1962' and annotated, signed and titled on the reverse, 123.5 x 199.5 cm (ARR)

Note: Bradley originally gifted this work to his friend, the artist Jacques Iselin. On the reverse of the work is a spontaneous sketch of a Knight, or Chevalier, a reference to both the title of the painting and perhaps the pairs relationship, as a pair of duelling artists.

Martin Bradley work is suffused with surrealism and symbolism, whilst also displaying the strong influence of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy which he encountered on his extensive travels around Asia. Artworks by Bradley are held in the Tate Gallery in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and by important figures such as Roland Penrose, Barbara Hepworth and Herbert Read. During the 1950s he held exhibitions at galleries including Gimpel Fils, Redfern and Galerie Rive Gauche, which showed important international figures such as Max Ernst and Yves Tanguy.
