Lot 19

Description

Duncan Grant,

British 1885-1978 -

Portrait of Edward Wolfe;

pencil on paper, signed with initials and titled upper left 'DG Teddy Wolfe', 27 x 36.5 cm (ARR)

Note: with thanks to Professor Frances Spalding for her assistance in the cataloguing of this work.

The present work was possibly made in 1919, when the South African artist, Edward Wolfe, visited Charleston. Wolfe had worked with the Omega Workshop during the latter stages of the First World War and helped Grant decorate the dividing doors in the first floor sitting room at 46 Gordon Square when Maynard Keynes had control of the house. These decorated doors are now in the collection of Kings College, Cambridge.

Grant studied at the Westminster School of Art, and is particularly well-known as a central member of the Bloomsbury Group. He was therefore closely associated with seminal figures in early 20th century British culture such as Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell, E.M. Forster and Lytton Strachey, alongside the art critic Roger Fry, the latter having a particularly strong impact on Grants artistic approach. Grants works can be found in a wide number of collections throughout the country, including the Tate Britain and the V&A in London, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.
