Lot 42

Description

Follower of Peter Tillemans,

Flemish 1684-1734-

A wooded landscape with two riders, two ladies carrying infants on their backs, and two travellers;

oil on canvas, 79.3 x 105.6 cm.

Provenance: Private Collection, UK.

Note: Tillemans produced a range of works including landscapes, portraits, interiors and conversation pieces, as well as sporting and genre pictures. Alongside John Wootton (c.1686-1764) and James Seymour (1702-1752), he was one of the founders of the English school of sporting painting. The present work brings to mind in particular aspects of his landscape and sporting scenes, and indeed Tillemans was celebrated for his ability to successfully combine the topographical tradition of landscape with a sporting element. He was further in demand as a painter of country house and estate views which he often brought them to life with the inclusion of animals. The present work depicts two noblemen riding up to two women carrying very young infants on their backs. On the right, two male travellers walk in the opposite direction. The composition is balanced both by the three figural groups and the three prominent trees above them.
