Lot 42

Description

After Giulio Romano,

Italian c.1499-1546-

Battle of the Milvian Bridge;

oil on canvas, 82.6 x 103 cm., (unframed).

Note: The present work comprises a section of the original, larger fresco by Romano, executed at the Vatican, Rome in 1520-4. After the death of Raphael in 1520, Romano worked together with other members of Raphael's workshop to complete the commission to decorate with frescoes the rooms that are now known as the Stanze di Raffaello in the Apostolic Palace at the Vatican. The Battle of the Milvian took place in 312 AD between the Roman Emperors Constantine I and Maxentius. Legend has it that a cross appeared in Constantine's dream with a voice advising him that he would win the battle if he were to use the cross as a weapon. The cross became his standard and he was victorious, thereby ending the Tetrarchy and initiating Constantine as the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. The Milvio Bridge still stands in northern Rome, crossing the River Tiber. The present work was likely executed in the late 17th Century.
