Description
James Basire The Elder,
British 1730-1802-
Maps 'For Mr. Tindal's Continuation of Mr. Rapin's History of England';
engravings, signed as engraved by J. Basire, each 42.5 x 53 cm. and similar, together with five maps engraved by Isaac Basire (1704-1768), forty-five (45).
Note: Published to illustrate Mr Tindal's translation of 'Mr. Rapin's History of England' in the 1740s, which was considered one of the few comprehensive histories written during the period, the maps show not only the British Isles but also parts of western Europe in which British armies had campaigned since 1688.
James Basire was the son of Isaac Basire, who founded the Basire engraving dynasty, and both members of the family worked principally on maps and book illustrations. James held the position of Engraver of the Society of Antiquaries of London and of the Royal Society of London.
