Description
André Dauchez,
French 1870-1948-
River landscape on a summer's day;
pastel on paper, signed (lower left), 63.5 x 91 cm.
Provenance: Anon. sale, Bonhams, Oxford, 17 February 2015, lot 317.; Private Collection, UK.
Note: Born in Paris, Dauchez was a celebrated painter of landscapes, waterscapes and seascapes. Initially trained in the technique of etching, he increasingly turned to painting, and was influenced by the 17th-Century Dutch landscape painters. In time Dauchez visited coastal Brittany, was seduced by its appearance, and there discovered an inexhaustible source of inspiration for his landscapes. As is apparent in the present work, he was highly skilled at describing the effects of natural light on trees and water.
