Description
Jacques-Philippe Le Sueur,
French 1757-1830-
Tympanum design with the subject of Diana;
pencil, pen and ink on paper, 20.8 x 57.5 cm., (unframed).
Provenance: Private Collection, UK.
Note: Le Sueur is predominantly known as a sculptor. Born in Paris, and a pupil of Francois-Joseph Duret, he was awarded the Prix de Rome and moved to the city in 1780. Throughout his career, he worked on sculptural design, the most prestigious including the bas-reliefs on the peristyle of the Pantheon; the Peace of Pressburg for the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel; one of the pediments of the inner court of the Louvre Palace; and a statue of Montaigne, placed in the town of Libourne. Whether Le Sueur went on to sculpt the tympanum designs of the present work is unknown. He was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1823.
We are grateful to Philippe Bordes for confirming the authenticity of the present work on the basis of photographs.
