Lot 21

Description

An Egyptian bronze ring, Ptolemaic period, circa 2nd-1st century BC, the solid hoop flat on the interior, slightly rounded on the exterior, expanding and flaring to the broad oval bezel, engraved with a female portrait bust in profile to the left, her hair pulled back and tied in a chignon, bezel 3.2 cm. wide; ring size P

Provenance: Christies London, 25 October 2012, Lot 211; Private Collection, Germany; acquired 1960-81 and thence by descent

For a similar bronze ring with female portrait head cf. G. M. Bernheimer, Ancient Gems from the Borowski Collection, 2007, p. 76, no. GF-26. In the above ring the absence of a diadem would suggest that a private individual is depicted rather than a royal portrait.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
