Description
Follower of Luis Meléndez,
Spanish 1716-1780-
Still life with fruit and vegetables;
oil on canvas, indistinctly signed and dated (lower right), 60.5 x 100.6 cm., (unframed).
Note: The present work closely relates to still life oils by Meléndez, especially in this artist's adoption of the wooden surface, the exquisite rendering of the fruit and vegetables, the treatment and colouring of the background, and in the overall use of light and shade. The present work updates and enriches the austere tradition of Spanish still life painting, which had been initiated by the 17th-century masters Juan Sánchez Cotán and Francisco de Zurbarán. Like them, and Meléndez, this artist clearly closely studied the effects of light, texture and colour on fruits and vegetables, skilfully conveying an accurate sense of volume and texture, and emphasising the artists descriptive skill. Unlike the works of Cotán and de Zurbarán, however, the subject matter is here presented physically closer to the viewer and at a lower vantage point, thereby encouraging viewers to study the objects for themselves. This exploration gives the foreground forms a distinct monumentality and was in keeping with the growing spirit of Enlightenment and the Spanish king's interest in natural history.
