Lot 179

Description

Louis Emile Pinel de Grandchamp,

French 1831-1894-

The mandolin player;

oil on canvas, signed (lower right), 27.4 x 21.9 cm.

Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 23 August 2006, lot 588.; Private Collection, UK.

Note: Recorded as an Arab genre painter in the Popular 19th Century Painting Dictionary by Hook and Poltimore, Pinel de Grandchamp went to the Middle East immediately after his 1849 Salon debut. Achieving a substantial reputation as a portraitist of Ottoman notables in Cairo and Constantinople, he remained in the Orient for fifteen years. The present work harbours an atmosphere of the exotic, and it is possible that the setting is within a harem.
