Lot 215

Description

Circle of John Da Costa,

British 1867-1931-

Portrait of a young girl in red blouse;

oil on canvas, 56 x 46 cm.

Note: This striking portrait of a young girl is clearly the work of an accomplished hand. There is great quality of execution here, especially in the sitter's eyes and in the generally subtle use of paint on the face to achieve a beautiful effect. There are many similarities to Da Costa's work in both the composition, treatment of the subject matter, and the handling of the paint. See for example, Da Costa's 'Spring Girl', offered at Bonhams, London, 11 June 2002, lot 130; and his portrait of Betty Da Costa offered at Sotheby's, London, 2 March 1988, lot 72.
