Lot 370

Description

Circle of Sir William Rothenstein,

British, 1872-1945-

Mother and child in an interior with a vase of flowers and framed Japanese prints;

oil on canvas, stretcher bears manufacturer's stamp Chenil Chelsea by the Town Hall, and remains of paper label Charles Chenil & Co. Ltd., 116.5x126.5cm., (unframed)

Note: Although not an exact copy, the composition of this work bears a striking resemblance to Sir William Rothenstein's 1903 'Mother and Child', which is currently in the collection of the Tate Britain in London. This painting was likely painted by a contemporary, who was influenced by Rothenstein's painting to render a similarly intimate maternal scene. The subject-matter and depiction of an interior recall the work of seventeenth-century Dutch painters, including Pieter de Hooch and Johannes Vermeer.

The work's connection to members of the New English Art Club is clear not only from the painting's style, but also from the materials used for its production. The markings on the reverse of the picture link this to Charles Chenil & Co Ltd, 183a, later also at 181, Kings Road, Chelsea, London 1905-1927. Artists' colourmen, brush manufacturers, picture framemakers and picture dealers.
